Children we are treating with ARVs; Asiyirani, Yamikani (seated) and Ruth outside their homes.
ARVs:
In our area of operation in central Africa (Nkhotakota district, Malawi) children suffering in remote areas from full-blown AIDS are effectively excluded from the Global Fund rollout of ARVs; their only future, an unpleasant, painful death. Virtually always the child is an orphan, having been infected by mother to child transmission at childbirth, both parents having since died from AIDS. We use WHO clinical staging to assess when to begin treatment, then use a holistic approach. There is no point giving these powerful medicines to a starving child so we ensure the child is well nourished and visit them in their homes every two weeks to monitor their social environment.
WE know of hundreds of children, in desperate need of this therapy, they will die if it is not forthcoming; can you sponsor one?
Q: What happens if I donate $540 a year to give this life-saving therapy to a child.
A: The clinician heading our ARV program will select the child in most urgent need, arrange a CD4 count and begin treatment. An initial 2 weeks to assess if there is a nevarapine reaction, then continous medication and assessment. Unless you choose otherwise you will be kept in the loop at each stage of the process, receive all reports and 6 monthly photos of the child.
Q: Could I come to Malawi and meet the child?
A: We are proud of what we do and encourage donors to come out to Malawi what their money achieves; for details
